Scanlon arbeitete John Rawls in seinem wichtigsten Werk "A Theory of Justice" zwei von drei Ideen der Rechtfertigung heraus. Scanlon erlutert das berlegungsGleichgewicht und den Urzustand in einem Artikel der in einem Sammelband zu Ehren des politischen und Moralphilosophen Rawls erschien. Trotz seiner weiterfhrenden Analyse ist Scanlon jedoch nicht in der Lage letzte Einwnde an Rawls Theorie auszurumen.
