El presente estudio corresponde a la segunda fase de un proyecto macro de investigacin denominado "Factores asociados del consumo de frutas y vegetales en nios escolares" de la Escuela de Nutricin de la Universidad de Costa Rica. Para identificar las razones de consumo de frutas y vegetales se trabaj con la metodologa de grupos focales. Se seleccionaron dos centros educativos pblicos y rurales del Gran Area Metropolitana de Costa Rica, durante el ao 2005. En total se realizaron 4 grupos focales(2 grupos integrados por varones y 2 de nias), con edades entre 10 y 12 aos y cada uno con 12 integrantes. El discuso abarc las siguientes dimensiones: ambiente familiar, ambiente escolar, disponibilidad de alimentos, caractersticas organolpticas de las frutas y vegetales, conocimientos, sexo y la asociacin entre el ver televisin con el consumo de estos alimentos. Se encontr que las caractersticas organolpticas de las frutas y vegetales son la principal razn de consumo y que los escolares tienen un conocimiento general de las propiedades nutricionales de estos alimentos y las asocian con una adecuada salud; sin embargo estos no son motivos determinantes para el consumo.
