Este trabajo pretende analizar cronolgicamente el sentido social y cultural de los autorretratos realizados en la cultura occidental desde la antigedad arcaica hasta la etapa contempornea, con la intencin de destacar las cambiantes funciones y conceptos que relacionan la vida social, la esttica y las necesidades individuales de los artistas vinculados a estos factores. El tema incluye reflexiones sobre el concepto de vanidad y egocentrismo relacionados con el Complejo de Narciso, el cual fue indicado por varios autores como la principal causa psicolgica para la realizacin de autorretratos. Sin embargo, este recorrido histrico pretende demostrar la diversidad de las funciones socioculturales que corresponden a los autorretratos a travs de los siglos, y sugiere la direccin general de este seguimiento social que describen sus mensajes.
