Demgegenber pldiert die Autorin dafr, regionalistische Bewegungen als soziale Bewegungen zu deuten, die nicht zwangslufig Vorformen nationaler Bewegungen sind, sondern viele Parallelen zu anderen sich ber askriptive Merkmale definierenden Bewegungen, wie z.B. der Frauenbewegung, aufweisen. Das Buch entwickelt einen Neuansatz der Regionalismusforschung, der aus einer handlungstheoretischen Perspektive der Frage nachgeht, warum in sptmodernen Gesellschaften unter bestimmten Bedingungen gerade die Region und nicht die Nation oder andere askriptive Merkmale zur Grundlage fr politisch handlungsrelevante soziale Grenzziehungen gemacht werden. Dabei zeigt sich u.a., da auch in den westlichen Gegenwartsgesellschaften entgegen rationalisierungs und modernisierungstheoretischen Annahmen affektuelle und wertrationale Motivationsstrukturen fr politisches Handeln bedeutsam sind.
