Dem Buch liegt ein handschriftliches Reisetagebuch zugrunde, welches eine Bildungsreise des Herrn Otto Karl Friedrich Grafen von Schnburg in den Jahren 1779 bis 1781 beschreibt. Aufgezeichnet wurde diese Reise vom anonym gebliebenen Diener des Herrn Grafen, der dem Manuskript den Vorzug verlieh, aus der Sicht des "einfachen Mannes" geschrieben zu sein. Goethe hatte seine erste Italienreise noch vor sich und Napoleon seine Pubertt. In Frankfurt am Main gab es ganze 3.000 Huser, wohingegen in London bereits 1.000 Lohnkutschen und 400 Portechaisen [Snften] unterwegs waren. Man frchtete Kaperschiffe, hngte Brandstifter in London und rderte Verbrecher in Paris.
