La Relacin acerca de las antigedades de los indios del fraile jernimo Ramn Pan se termin de escribir a fines de 1498. Es el primer libro escrito en el Nuevo Mundo. Es tambin la primera descripcin de la religiosidad de los indios tanos, habitantes de Santo Domingo. Fray Ramn Pan, pobre ermitao de la Orden de San Jernimo como l mismo se presenta, lleg a la Isla en compaa de Cristbal Coln en su segundo viaje, en 1494. Despus de vivir un ao en el fuerte de la Magdalena, por indicacin de Coln y con el fin de aprender la lengua, se traslad a vivir con el cacique Guarionex. Durante casi dos aos permaneci con este cacique hasta que decepcionado porque ste abandonaba las enseanzas cristianas, se traslad a vivir con el cacique Mabiatu que manifestaba su deseo de adherirse al cristianismo. Pan estuvo tres aos con este otro cacique. Se piensa que Pan habra entregado su Manuscrito a Coln, al regreso de ste a Espaa en agosto de 1500. En Espaa el Manuscrito fue visto y estuvo en manos de al menos tres personas: Pedro Mrtir de Anglera quien lo incluy en la primera de sus Dcadas del nuevo Mundo; fray Bartolom de las Casas que lo extracta e incluye en su Historia de las Indias y Hernando Coln que lo reproduce ntegro en la Historia del almirante don Cristbal Coln. Se da la paradoja de que, pese a las menciones de estos autores, el original de Pan de la Relacin acerca de las antigedades de los indios desapareci.
