Der Autor Amos Oz ist 1939 unter dem Namen Amos Klausner als Kind einer Einwandererfamilie in Jerusalem geboren worden. Die erste Generation, die in Israel aufwchst, hat mit allen Neueinwanderern, Flchtlingen und denjenigen, die schon einige Jahre vor der Staatsgrndung gelebt haben, gemeinsam, dass sie den Schwierigkeiten ihrer Zeit ausgesetzt ist. Sie mssen ihren Platz in einer Gesellschaft finden, die vom stetigen Umbruch durch politische, religise und ethnische Spannungen gekennzeichnet ist und sich selbst erst noch etablieren muss. Welche Identifikationsangebote die Nation, die noch in den Kinderschuhen steckt, nun bereitstellt ist fraglich und stellt die Bewohner des Landes vor ein groes Problem. Amos Oz, der in seinem autobiographischen Roman in unzusammenhngenden Episoden beinahe anekdotenhaft seine Kindheit und Jugend schildert, zeigt gerade hierduch, wie er seinen Platz in seiner Heimat und seine damit verbundene Identitt gefunden hat.
