Hannelore Mullers Studie widmet sich am Beispiel der Karaer der theoretischen Grundlegung der religionswissenschaftlichen Kategorie religioser Minoritaten, ihrer Typologisierung und Analyse. Den thematischen Schwerpunkt bilden dabei endo und exogene Faktoren der religionsgeschichtlichen Dynamik der Karaer im Osten Europas im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert und die Frage ihres kollektiven Erhalts. Als notwendiges Analyseinstrument religioser Pluralitat prasentiert Muller dabei ein generisches Minoritatenmodell, das auf den fur jede religiose Minoritat zentralen Aspekten ihrer Existenz aufbaut: Genese, Assimilation und Erhalt. Diese gelten auch fur die Karaer, die aufgrund ihrer Ablehnung des Talmud im babylonischen Judentum des 8./9. Jhs bis heute eine doppelte religiose Minoritat darstellen. Eine der Antworten auf die Frage, wie diese kleine Minoritat es geschafft hat, sich uber 1200 Jahre nicht in der Geschichte zu verlieren, liegt in ihrem historisch privilegierten Status; so beantragten die Karaer 1938 bei der deutschen nationalsozialistischen Regierung ihre Anerkennung als NichtJuden, die ihnen schliesslich 1943 auch gewahrt wurde. Muller wertet fur die Aufarbeitung dieser Periode karaischer Religionsgeschichte in Europa altes und neues Archivmaterial aus Berlin, Paris und New York aus, das in einem Anhang zum Teil erstmalig publiziert wird.
