This small book is meant to aid the reader to understand the nature of religion and its content. It may be found useful to students of college religion classes, persons thinking of joining a religion, or those adults simply curious about the subject matter. As a human phenomenon, a religion must give an answer to the mystery of humankind as a species that has emerged slowly from a fiery planet over the last few billion years. The nature and direction of the species must be the yardstick against which the religion is judged and not merely what persons in a religion have decided about their fate and direction. Sound human reason, wisdom, is the greatest gift that the Creator has given to our world as we know it and, a fortiori, is the phenomenon most closely related to the deity. Even claims about the nature or attributes of the Creator are subject to scrutiny by reason. To deny this is to place feeling, a lesser trait, over thinking. Thus, while a religion may claim to have mystical origins, ultimately it is subject to rational analysis, both in origin and content, as well as effects upon the world. The claim may well be true, but the act of accepting a religion, however fraught with emotion and asserted to have a divine origin, is finally a human act and must come under rules of logic and ethics. The claim itself is not exempt. This little book, using Christianity as an example, offers a rational approach to religion. Its author, highly educated and experienced in teaching persons about religious matters both at a university and graduate level, welcomes feedback from readers.
