This work, more, perhaps, than any other work of fiction that ever was written, has been a collection and arrangement of real incidents, of actions really performed, of words and expressions really uttered, grouped together with reference to a general result, in the same manner that the mosaic artist groups his fragments of various stones into one general picture." (Beecher Stowe 1853: S. 5) Mit diesen Worten beginnt Harriet Beecher Stowes Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin1. Eine Abhandlung, in der die Autorin reale Vorkommnisse schildert, die ihre oft als bertrieben kritisierten Szenen und Charaktere im Roman rechtfertigen. Dass Beecher Stowe mit Uncle Tom's Cabin2 einen Roman geschaffen hat, der es unmglich machte, die Sklavenfrage weiterhin zu ignorieren ist unumstritten. Dass der Roman sofort zu einem Bestseller wurde, dessen Inhalt sowohl hoch gelobt als auch aufs Schrfste angegriffen wurde, ist ebenfalls bekannt. Meine Arbeit wird sich jedoch nur am Rande mit dem Thema Sklaverei beschftigen. Ich werde auf das Mutter und Frauenbild im Roman eingehen, auf den Umgang mit Religion aus heutiger Sicht teilweise nicht mehr nachvollziehbar sowie auf die oft kritisierte Sentimentalitt von Uncle Tom's Cabin. Zur Zeit der Verffentlichung durchaus als groes literarisches Werk geschtzt, wurde der Roman in spteren Jahren als sentimentaler Kitsch betrachtet. Erst in der jngeren Vergangenheit wurde dies neu bewertet.
