School based management has been found to enhance the student performace. It is an approach to running the 21st century school and it is described as the decentralization or the decisional involvement of personnel closest to students. It is the transfer of decision making from higher authority to the school level. The approach is a form of school management where the responsibility over school operations is handed over to headmasters and classroom teachers (and soemtimes students) in which they cooperate and codecide on what goes on in the School. This approach, it is believed, improves schools. In this book, it is argued that it is only the appropriate mix between pressure and support (accountability and capacity building) that will bring about authentic improvements in the school and, hence, enhance the performance of today's students.
