Avec un succs considrable, ce mtier mergent, extrmement dynamique, se diffuse sur l'ensemble du territoire national durant la deuxime moiti du sicle, principalement Paris : entre 1840 et 1920, plus de trois mille trois cent soixantetrois photographes s'installent dans la capitale et, en 1896, la profession fait vivre quelque cinq mille personnes intramuros. Les ateliers de photographie reposent sur une division du travail et une structure quasiment industrielle ; la tche de chaque ouvrier est organise comme dans une vritable chane de production. Aprs trente ans de patientes recherches, Franois Boisjoly dresse la silhouette de cette nouvelle activit en pleine explosion et recense plus de trois mille photographes parisiens ayant exerc avant 1900. Il tablit pour chacun une vritable carte d'identit professionnelle : spcialit, activit principale, adresses succcessives d'ateliers, dbut et fin d'activit, succursales, noms des successeurs et prdcesseurs...
