La utilizacin de ciertas especies arbreas nativas andinopatagnicas con fines productivos requiere conocer sus respuestas fisiolgiomorfolgicas frente a factores de estrs ambiental. En el presente trabajo se estudiaron los mecanismos de respuesta de dos especies del genero Nothofagus (N. nervosa y N. obliqua). Los experimentos de estrs hdrico mostraron que estas especies poseen mecanismos anisohdricos de regulacin del potencial hdrico mnimo, con un estricto cierre estomtico ante altos VPDs, existiendo en N. obliqua una ventaja comparativa frente a N. nervosa al menos ante condiciones de estrs moderado. Ambas especies respondieron mejor a condiciones intermedias de sombra, siendo el principal mecanismo de aclimatacin ante alta irrradiancia la produccin de hojas neoformadas. En relacin a la temperatura, N. obliqua mostr un mayor rango de temperaturas ptimas para la fotosntesis, sugiriendo una mayor adaptacin a condiciones climticas variables. Los resultados de este trabajo contribuyen a entender la distribucin restringida de ambas especies en el NO de la Patagonia argentina donde la variacin ambiental es grande en cortas distancias.
