This monograph presents four case studies of movements from Thailand and Sri Lanka. They are analyzed for their teaching, leadership, and social action. While these movements are primarily concerned for economic justice, they have encountered ethnic and political conflicts in their development. The four movements also reveal various degrees of disjuncture with contemporary power structure. Some have informal relationships to governmental and international agencies. In other cases they represent an attempt to establish an alternative economic and social order.
