This monograph presents four case studies of movements from Thailand and Sri Lanka. They are analyzed for their teaching, leadership, and social action. While these movements are primarily concerned for economic justice, they have encountered ethnic and political conflicts in their development. The four movements also reveal various degrees of disjuncture with contemporary power structure. Some have informal relationships to governmental and international agencies. In other cases they represent an attempt to establish an alternative economic and social order. This study provides an outline of the socioeconomic teaching, the role of founders and leaders, and the social action of these four movements. Contents: include: SocialCultural Setting of Contemporary Religion in Thailand and Sri Lanka; The Sarvodaya Shramadana; The Christian Workers Fellowship; Thai Interreligious Committee Development; The Asian Cultural Forum on Development; and Rural Poverty, Peasant Development, and Religion in Southeast Asia Sulak Sivaraksa.
