English summary: The volume combines 24 essays by international experts, which investigate wide range of nonfiction and fictional texts, which represent the themes of crossing borders and the experience of other regions. In recent decades the real and imaginary depiction of movement, whether in the form of migration or in the form of individual (longdistance) travel, has gained more and more importance and has inspired the development of international travel literature as well as its exploration in cultural and literary fields. On account of the analysis of the transatlantic experiences of European travelers in the 19th century, the articles open up new perspectives on autobiographical and fictional representations of contemporary Canadian and USAmerican authors. Inspired by these representations, the essays investigate the complex meanings and consequences of overstepping political, as well as geographic borders within and without of the North American continent, and the passing of invisible lines of demarcation between ethnicities. Moreover, the essays also explore the overstepping of boundaries in the field of media, the poetic depiction of images, or even the given conquest of spatial and temporal boundaries in the "global fiction" in North America. A creative study of the prominent Canadiam author Aritha van Herk begins the series of essays, whose interdisciplinarity is visible in the application of methods from social psychology, cultural anthropology, art history and comparative studies. The volume is especially geared towards literary and cultural scholars, who study Canadian and American texts as well as to all readers who are interested in travel literature. In den letzten Jahrzehnten gewann die reale und imaginare Darstellung von Bewegung, sei es in Form von Migration, oder in Form von individuellen (Fern)Reisen, immer mehr an Bedeutung und hat die Entfaltung der internationalen Reiseliteratur ebenso befluegelt, wie auch deren Erforschung im kultur und literaturwissenschaftlichen Bereich. Neben der Analyse der transatlantischer Erfahrungen europaischer Reisender im 19. Jahrhundert, eroffnen die Aufsatze neue Perspektiven auf autobiographische und fiktionale Darstellungen von zeitgenossischen kanadischen und US amerikanischen AutorInnen. Angeregt durch diese, werden die komplexen Bedeutungen und Konsequenzen des Uberschreitens politischer, aber auch geographischer Grenzen innerhalb und ausserhalb des nordamerikanischen Kontinents, sowie des Passierens von unsichtbaren Demarkationslinien zwischen Ethnien untersucht.
