El agua, entendida como un recurso limitado y de primera necesidad, es amenazada da a da por la accin del hombre. Este recurso se est transformando de manera muy acelerada en un bien, que en pocos aos ms ser causal de muchos conflictos entre naciones para obtenerla. La presente investigacin pretende contribuir al uso eficiente de dicho recurso, centrndose en el ahorro del agua en el riego de reas verdes, como jardines, canchas, parques, etc., privados y pblicos. Estas reas son importantes en las ciudades porque contribuyen de manera eficiente a la purificacin del aire, sin embargo, la mayora de las veces son regadas de manera ineficiente; permitiendo el despilfarro de este vital elemento, que es el agua. En el presente estudio se dise un modelo para optimizar la localizacin de aspersores de riego en reas verdes, cuyo propsito es entregar al usuario una herramienta para planear un sistema de riego. Esto permitir optimizar el uso del agua, lo que conlleva a un ahorro del recurso, y por ende, un ahorro econmico para el dueo del predio, puesto que la mayora de las reas verdes que existen en las zonas urbanas son regadas con agua potable.
