La lrica espaola moderna, desde el ltimo tsercio del siglo XIX, tiene un referente imprescindible y esencial, la poesa de Gustavo Adolfo Bcquer, considerado tradicionalmente en los manuales de literatura como un romntico rezagado o un epgono del romanticismo espaol. Sin embargo, Bcquer es mucho ms que eso para la poesa espaola, puesto que no es slo el epgono de un movimiento literario, sino adems y sobre todo, un punto de partida, la apertura hacia una nueva concepcin de la poesa, y un germen vitalizador y fecundo. Por tanto, para comprender lo que las Rimas suponen en la evolucin de la lrica espaola, hay que comenzar, al menos, por considerar a su autor no como romntico rezagado, sino como romntico dfroqu (que colg los hbitos), como se llam a Heine despus de la publicacin de Alta Troll. Pues, aunque ciertas caractersticas romnticas estn muy presentes en su obra (ms en la narrativa que en la lrica), lo que en ella prima es la impronta de una moderna concepcin de la poesa, de un estilo nuevo, que queda muy lejos de aquel pletrico de exclamaciones, hiprboles, suspensiones, exaltacin de ciertos temas...
