In der Dichtung des 12. und 13. Jahrhunderts bezeichnet der Begriff Sarrazin die Feinde der Christenheit. Das Repertoire an Ausdrucksmoglichkeiten reicht dabei vom edlen Heiden mit ritterlichhofischen Zugen bis zum ungeschlachten Monster. Ob gut oder schlecht, hasslich oder schon, ritterlich oder barbarisch wild aussagekraftig wird die jeweilige Beschreibung erst im Kontrast zur Schilderung des christlichen Lagers. Dadurch wird die hinter der Darstellungsweise stehende eigentliche Funktion des Fremdbildes greifbar, die jedoch nicht in der Wahrnehmung des Fremden als Fremdem, sondern als verkehrtes Spiegelbild des Eigenen besteht. An ausgewahlten Dichtungen aus der altfranzosischen und mittelhochdeutschen Literatur zeigt die Studie, welche Elemente der Fremdbeschreibung vorkommen und in welchem Verhaltnis sie zum Eigenbild der christlichen Autoren stehen.
