Durante os 56 anos que permaneceu entre o Japo e a China, ganhou a amizade de Toyotomi Hideyoshi e Tokugawa Ieyasu dois dos trs lderes nipnicos designados de 'Unificadores do Japo' desempenhou um papel activo no comrcio da seda entre a China e o Japo e durante alguns anos tornouse o europeu mais influente da cidade de Nagasaki e, de certa forma, de todo o Japo.Escreveu vrias obras, destacandose um estudo da gramtica japonesa denominado 'Arte da Lingoa de Iapam', publicado em 1604 que integra um vasto registo literrio dedicado cultura nipnica.
