Durante os 56 anos que permaneceu entre o Japo e a China, ganhou a amizade de Toyotomi Hideyoshi e Tokugawa Ieyasu dois dos trs lderes nipnicos designados de 'Unificadores do Japo' desempenhou um papel activo no comrcio da seda entre a China e o Japo e durante alguns anos tornouse o europeu mais influente da cidade de Nagasaki e, de certa forma, de todo o Japo.Escreveu vrias obras, destacandose um estudo da gramtica japonesa denominado 'Arte da Lingoa de Iapam', publicado em 1604 que integra um vasto registo literrio dedicado cultura nipnica. Entre outras obras de referncia deste acervo, destacamse tambm a 'Arte Breve da Lngua de Japam' (1620) e 'A Histria da Igreja de Japam' (1634).Rodrigues viajou por toda a China, esteve envolvido na controvrsia dos ritos, conduziu negcios oficiais em nome de Macau e tomou parte no conflito entre os Ming e os invasores Manchu.
