Einiges, was die Handlung des Balletts vorantreibt, wird durch sie motiviert. Julia, die von Margot Fonteyn getanzt wird, ist gewissermaen die Protagonistin. Sollte dies berhaupt jemanden stren, dann wohl nur aus dem Grund, dass Romeo dabei zu kurz kommen knnte. Womglich bildet er keinen ausreichenden, interessanten Kontrast zu seiner Partnerin. Romeo und Julia', das Drama von Shakespeare, ist schlielich eine Liebesgeschichte, die Konzentration liegt demnach wie der Titel bereits andeutet auf dem Liebespaar. Auf Romeo und Julia. Das bedeutet aber nicht, dass der Zuschauer anderen Figuren nicht ebenso viel Beachtung schenken knnte. Und fllt sein Auge erst einmal auf Mercutio und Benvolio, die Freunde von Romeo, so wird ihm bewusst werden, dass auch sie tragende Elemente sind. Sowohl fr die Handlung, als auch fr Romeo. (Benvolio ist gleichermaen Romeos Cousin, aber das macht fr die Handlung keinen Unterschied. Auch er fungiert in erster Linie als Freund.) In meiner Arbeit werde ich mich weniger darauf konzentrieren, inwiefern Romeos Freunde in das allgemeine Geschehen eingreifen, beziehungsweise aus welchen Eigenschaften sich die Charaktere bilden. Vielmehr werde ich auf die Beziehung der drei Freunde untereinander eingehen, was die drei Figuren miteinander verbindet, wie sich dies uert, und inwieweit sich Romeo hauptschlich durch seine Verliebtheit in Julia von den anderen beiden abhebt. Niemand knnte bezweifeln, dass Benvolio oder vor allem Mercutio sich als schlechte Freunde' erweisen wrden. Doch wie verhlt es sich mit Romeo?
