This brief, chronological survey covers the Ancient world in three parts: Prehistoric Europe and the Ancient Near East; Ancient Greece; and Ancient Rome. Succinct enough to be used with supplements, the coverage is carefully balanced between narrative and interpretation, highlighting historians varying viewpoints on certain issues. Guy Rogers careful revision preserves C. Warren Hollisters style while bringing the text uptodate.

I enjoyed the content, but some parts felt a little slow. It covers a lot of ground in a short space, which is impressive, but I wish it had more anecdotes or storytelling to liven things up. Still, it’s a decent overview of ancient Western history.

Informative but a bit dry at times

Too simplistic for my taste
I was hoping for a more in-depth take on the ancient world. While it covers the basics, it feels a bit too simplified for what I was looking for. Not a bad book, but I think I need something more detailed. Could be good for beginners though!
