Wenn man beim Versuch, den Sinnhorizont antiker Mythen zu erschlieen, ein wenig in sich hinein horcht, dann kann und wird man sich selbst dabei begegnen. Hier werden nicht nur die Taten von Gttern und Helden ergreifend erzhlt, sondern Lebensfragen und menschliche Probleme abgebildet, die heute wie damals aktuell sind. Da wir uns als Menschen seit der Antike nicht verndert haben und uns vermutlich niemals wirklich ndern werden, verlieren auch die Mythen ihre Bedeutung nicht. Sie sind die Spiegel, in denen uns das eigene Schicksal bewusst und deutbar wird. Dieser Bedeutungstrchtigkeit haben es die antiken Mythen zu verdanken, dass sie im Laufe der Menschheitsgeschichte, je nach Zeitgeist und Religion, immer wieder aufgegriffen, verndert und neu gedeutet werden, wurden und werden werden. Diese Rezeption ist oft abhngig von gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen, abgesteckt von den Mchtigen einer jeden Zeit. Zu solchen stark vom Zeitgeist abhngigen Mythen gehrt die Geschichte vom unsterblich in seine Skulptur verliebtem Bildhauer Pygmalion. Ausgehend von der Aufklrung und von Rousseaus Bedeutung fr das 18. Jahrhundert, wird die Deutung seines Pygmalions einerseits Gegenstand dieser Arbeit sein. Dabei werde ich zunchst kurz und allgemein die Herkunft des Mythos' und seine Rezeptionsgeschichte bis ins 18. Jahrhundert erklren, um dann speziell auf Rousseau einzugehen. Parallel soll die Bearbeitung des Pygmalions in der bildenden Kunst untersucht werden. Nach dem Erkunden der Motive in Rousseaus Pygmalion werde ich dann konkret auf bildknstlerische Bearbeitungen eingehen. Da diese
