La comptence de lauditeur a souvent t considre dans la littrature comme une assurance de la capacit de dtection sans prendre en compte la composante relationnelle. A partir dune observation participante dune dure de quatre ans au sein du cabinet Audit & Co, nous nous sommes intresss comprendre le lien entre un des fondements de la qualit de laudit, savoir la comptence, et le cabinet daudit en tant quorganisation sociale. En prenant comme cadre danalyse la thorie des rseaux sociaux selon trois axes : le capital social, la confiance et la rputation. Les rsultats de notre recherche permettent daller un peu plus loin que la vision traditionnelle et impersonnelle quoffre lapproche classique de la comptence de lauditeur, dans la mesure o le construit social par lauditeur est aussi une comptence. Sur la base de ces rsultats, nous considrons que la constitution dun capital social, conditionne par la combinaison confiancerputation, est dterminante pour lvolution de la carrire de lauditeur. Audel dune comptence purement technique , cest sa comptence dtre socialement intgr dans un rseau qui lui promet davantage dvoluer.
