'En la Persia medieval, desgarrada por contradicciones surgidas de la pugna entre el sustrato cultural autctono y la impuesta civilizacin rabe que en aquel momento defenda el fanatismo religioso, la figura de Omar Jayyam aparece como un astro inesperado en un firmamento tormentoso. Por entonces, los sultanes gasnaves y selycidas, de origen turco, dejaban que se acusara impunemente de hereja e incredulidad a los cientficos y que se despreciara a los filsofos. Tanto ms inusitada resulta, pues, en este panorama la personalidad de un cientfico, pensador y poeta indomable que, gracias a su inteligencia, se mantuvo inclume sin ceder en ningn punto respecto a sus convicciones y sin hacer alarde de sus conocimientos. De entre todas sus actividades, aquella que llevaba a cabo en secreto, la poesa, era un espejo donde todo lo dems se reflejaba: la aficin a la msica, el pensamiento prximo a Avicena, el saber matemtico y de la astronoma, las ciencias naturales y el conocimiento profundo de la existencia. Lo que Jayyam tena que decir, y que proceda de su visin racional de las cosas, tena un carcter tan alarmante y explosivo que deba mantenerse oculto. Por este motivo, los rubayat de Jayyam fueron clandestinos en su momento y segn el escritor iran del siglo XX Sadeq Hedayat, exceptuando trece de ellos, estos poemas no se reunieron hasta tres siglos despus de la muerte del poeta. (...) La potencia de unos versos se mide por ellos mismos, pero tambin por la dimensin del rea que abarcan. Si nica es la poesa de Jayyam en s, nico es tambin el alcance de su repercusin.
