Eingebunden in die gesamteuropische Auseinandersetzung zwischen dem Metternichschen System und den europischen Demokratiebewegungen bedrohte der um die Zugehrigkeit der Herzogtmer Schleswig und Holstein gefhrte Krieg 184850 die russische Vormachtstellung in Nordeuropa und Deutschland. Durch Drohungen und eine geschickte Verhandlungsfhrung gelang Ruland 1853 noch einmal die vorlufige Regelung dieser Frage im Sinne der Legitimitt.
