This book contains 18 rules. Total surrender of the soul to God is the key to the whole book. The early rules are meant to prepare the way for total surrender, the later rules to carry it through. The first thing necessary for total surrender is the determination to get rid of all deliberate sin and affection for sin, (Rule 1). This requires supernaturalization of the motives out of which we act (Rule 2). It is essential we avoid exaggeration and extremes (Rule 3). to grow in virtue we must learn to love and accept humiliation (Rule 4). We must realize that sanctity is a slow and gradual ascent (Rule 5). Learning to pray and mortification (Rule 6). Adversity and not consolations brings us closer to god (Rule 7). Accustom ourselves to the presence on God (Rule 8). Find holiness in the faithful and constant fulfillment of our everyday duties (Rule 9). Love Christ, the Eucharist, ?The Blessed Virgin Mary and the Holy Ghost (Rule 10). Avoiding lukewarmness (Rule 11). Growing in holiness and avoiding decay (Rule 12). Making Jesus our sole desire (Rule 13). Daily Surrender to God (Rule 14). Putting commitment to God into practice (Rule 15). Living in joy and perfect peace (Rule 16). Realize that contemplation is superior to action. (Rule 17). The transforming union is the summit of the spiritual life and the prelude to beatitude. (Rule 18)
