From the Author This book was inspired by my experiences working on documentariesaround the worldfor National Geographic Television. Having served in the Peace Corps in West Africa, I was a natural pick for the more rugged projects that involved trekking into distant parts of Africa, camping in the middle of the jungle, and even chasing maneating predators. Many of the experiences described in the book actually took placefrom the small details, like waking up in the middle of the night to spooky sounds outside my tent and a desperately full bladder, to getting lost in the middle of the jungle. While no one fortunately disappeared in the middle of any of these productions, we did often find ourselves questioning the wisdom of executives who were dictating moves from the comfort of their homes and offices back in the US, wondering if we were putting ourselves in compromising situations for the sake of a more dramatic story line.
