Runen waren niemals profane Schriftzeichen zum Festhalten des gesprochen Worts, sondern magische, tief religise Symbole fr weit komplizierte Zusammenhnge von tiefgrndiger Bedeutung. Symbole, die zu unseren ureigensten Wurzeln weisen, die unsere Ahnen als heilig erlebt haben. Sinnbilder fr eine geistige Qualitt, fr eine Gttlichkeit oder eine umfassende Idee. Ursprnglich wurden die Runen in Buchenstbe geritzt, wovon das Wort "Buchstabe" auch heute noch zeugt. Viele dieser Symbole findet man heute noch in alten Schnitzereien an Husern als Schutzzeichen, oder sie sind unbemerkt in unseren Alltag bergegangen. Mit dieser Arbeit soll den Lesern die Runen als interessante und hchst faszinierende Thematik erffnen werden. Nach der begrifflichen Klrung und der Einordnung der Runen in die Sprachgeschichte werden mehrere Theorien ber die Herkunft der germanischen Runenschrift errtert. Anschlieend erfolgt eine Differenzierung der Zeichen in Begriffssymbole, Lautzeichen und Gebrauchsschrift, worauf eine detailliertere Vorstellung der Runenalphabete erfolgt, speziell das ltere Futhark. Die Weiterentwicklung und Ablsung dieser Alphabete stellt den 7. Punkt der Betrachtungen dar. Den Abschluss bildet ein kurzer berblick ber die Verwendung von Runen in der Gegenwart.
