Sagwitch, a leader of the Northwestern Shoshone, grew up as European Americans began arriving in his homeland. When conflict erupted in the Bear River Massacre, Sagwitch and a band of desperate survivors decided to join the people who occupied their homeland, and were baptized as Mormons.
