In der vorliegenden Arbeit Samurai und Geld sucht der Autor den wesentlichen Ansatz zur Modernisierung der japanischen Gesellschaft in der hoch entwickelten Warengeldwirtschaft der vormodernen EdoZeit. Diese wurde paradoxerweise durch die Herrschaftsstruktur der Samurai ermglicht, denn im Grunde lag das Geld dem Wesen der Samurai fern.
