Cuando Miguel de Unamuno (18641936) escribe San Manuel Bueno, Mrtir, se halla al final de sus das (1930); pese a manifestar en el prlogo el carcter teolgico y filosfico de la breve narracin, tambin afirma haber puesto en ella 'todo mi sentimiento trgico de la vida cotidiana. La fe y la duda, convertidas en dramas para un sacerdote, llevarn a Manuel Bueno a la 'agona' en el sentido etimolgico que Unamuno utilizaba para ese trmino: una lucha por la fe, una lucha por querer creer, que desolaba al propio escritor. Adems de ser otra obra considerada como la mejor narracin unamuniana, el prlogo escrito por Unamuno para la edicin de 1933 y otros dos relatos completan este volumen: La novela de Don Sandalio, jugador de ajedrez y Un pobre hombre rico.
