Mr. Hoveland s greatgrandparents settled in northwestern Wisconsin after immigrating from Norway and once there they established themselves in a community of fellow Norwegians. Hoveland gives us their history as well as the history of their children and grandchildren. But he does not stop there. With photographic clarity that is remarkable for its detail, the author gives us not only his own family, but also the families of the Norwegian people around him, people whose names and relationships and lives he remembers vividly. Interestingly, he describes the transition from wheat production to dairying, a more sustainable and profitable agricultural system, and the daily life of farmers producing feed crops and caring for their cows. In this evocative memoir, Carl Soren Hoveland has given us an enjoyable history and fascinating read.
