Sarah Lee Guthrie intended to go to college, but her family had other ideas. They wanted me to stay with the family business, she once said. I guess this was my way of rebelling. The family business, of course, involved traveling around the country making music.
In LA she met her future husband, Johnny Irion. I came to California with a huge notebook full of my writings. Johnny kept telling me I should sing them and one night I did. My whole life turned around then.
Good-bye college, hello family business.

About the Artist

Daughter of Arlo and grand-daughter of Woody, Sarah Lee Guthrie continues her familys musical journey. With her entire life steeped in music, musicians and the road, she listened, learned and developed her own style. That she is now writing, performing and producing CDs seems a natural progression. Remaining true to her folk roots, she uses them as a frame on which to build her own creations. The folk process in action.
Sarah Lee grew up in Massachusetts, on the road with her father, Arlo , and she spent several years living and going to school on an ashram in Florida. Like her father and grandfather before, her spiritual connection is deep and this is apparent in many of her songs.
In 1993, aged 14, while playing with her family and Pete Seeger at Wolftrap Farms , Sarah Lee soloed on Petes Sailing Down This Golden River to thunderous applause. If you cant beat them, join them seemed like the right thing to do and Sarah picked up a guitar, learned some chords. As soon as she graduated high school she hit the road and has never looked back.
She toured with her father and brother for several years eventually earning herself a move from the backline to center stage. She began performing as a solo artist and toured on downtime from Arlos tours.
Today she performs with and is married to musician Johnny Irion. Their first CD together is scheduled for release Fall 2004. They tour on their own but still perform with Arlo as often as they can. Recently Sarah and Johnny performed on the main stage at the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival in Okemah, Oklahoma.
Sarah also sings with The Guthrie Family Jam Band, a loose and everchanging group of siblings, parents, and children.
Sarah Lee and Johnnys 2 year old daughter Olivia is a seasoned road vetern already. She is a fixture at all their shows. She already sings and plays too. An appearance with the Jam Band seems inevitable. The circle continues.
