Le livre V est consacr Julien dont le rgne trs court eut cependant une importance historique considrable en raison de la stature et du destin exceptionnels de cet empereur condamn comme apostat par la tradition chrtienne unanime mais dont le caractre et l'action sont encore aujourd'hui objet de dbats. Sozomne donne de Julien une image qui, venant d'un chrtien, ne pouvait tre que ngative, exagrant sans doute ses actes de perscution, mais laissant apparatre aussi l'intelligence et l'habilet politique du personnage. ct de celui d'un tel ' hros ', les rgnes de ses successeurs, l'phmre Jovien et mme Valentinien Ier et Valens, fondateurs d'une dynastie de parvenus, risquaient de paratre bien ternes. Sozomne a su leur confrer un relief presque quivalent en creusant l'opposition entre le ' nicen ' Valentinien et l'' arien ' Valens, en prsentant ce dernier comme un perscuteur sans merci et en enrichissant son rcit d'importants dveloppements sur le monachisme oriental. Le livre se clt par la dfaite et la mort de l'hrtique dans l'incendie d'Andrinople qui fait cho l'chec de la reconstruction du Temple de Jrusalem par l'Apostat et la mort de ce dernier dans les sables de la Perse sassanide.
