Als der Wald um das Haus seiner Familie einer Wohnsiedlung weichen muss, darf er nicht mal mehr nach drauen ans Licht. Er verbringt seine Tage allein in einer dunklen Dachkammer bis er im Fenster des gegenberliegenden Hauses das Gesicht eines Mdchens entdeckt; und das, obwohl es in dieser Familie schon zwei Jungen gibt. Die Begegnung mit Jen, die wie er ein Schattenkind ist, erffnet Luke eine ganz neue Welt. Via Internet hat Jen mit anderen dritten Kindern Kontakt und plant eine Protestkundgebung, mit der sie durchsetzen will, dass die Dritten endlich ein Existenzrecht bekommen. Luke ist beeindruckt von der Tatkraft und der Lebenslust, die Jen aufbringt. Zum ersten Mal im Leben erfhrt er, was Freundschaft ist, und beginnt Hoffnung in die Zukunft zu setzen. Aber kann man mit 12 Jahren einem totalitren Regime die Stirn bieten? Hat so eine Revolte auch nur die geringsten Aussichten auf Erfolg? Jen setzt Luke unter Druck, bei der riskanten Aktion mitzumachen. Doch er ist ganz anders aufgewachsen als Jen, ihr Selbstvertrauen fehlt ihm, er kann nicht ber seinen Schatten.
