Der vorliegende Versuch, den Wandel der Sozialstruktur in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland historisch zu rekonstruieren, wurde von der Geschichte eingeholt. Seit der Wiedervereinigung der beiden deutschen Teilstaaten im Oktober 1990 gibt es den Forschungsgegenstand der vorlie genden Arbeit in seiner ehemaligen Form nicht mehr: das heutige Staats ge bilde der Bundesrepublik Deutschland besteht aus den "alten" und den "neuen" Bundeslndern, die aus dem Staats gebilde der Deutschen Demo kratischen Republik hervorgegangen sind. Wo im folgenden von der "Bundesrepublik Deutschland" die Rede ist, sind ausschlielich die Bundeslnder des 1949 entstandenen Staatsgefges gemeint. Die politischen Umwlzungen der letzten Jahre provozieren die Frage, in welchem Verhltnis die zentralen Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit zur heutigen Gesellschaft der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und deren Entwicklungsten denzen stehen. Der Weg in die Erlebnisgesellschaft und der damit verbundene Wandel der Sozialstruktur ist die markante Entwicklungslinie der alten Bundesrepublik Deutschland; dieser Weg wird soweit dies bislang zu erkennen ist auch von den neuen Bundeslndern beschritten. Hinter dem "Aufbau Ost" steht die Zielvorstellung westlicher Lebensverhltnisse, die den Menschen der ehemaligen DDR bislang unbe kannte Erfllungsmglichkeiten im Warenparadies verheien. Es geht um die Vielfalt der Wahlmglichkeiten zwischen Konsumgtern und Dienstlei stungen, die im Westen lngst zur materiellen Grundlage des Lebenssinns geworden sind, nmlich das Leben zu genieen und zu "erleben". Die derzeitige Umstrukturierung der alten Bundeslnder wird wohl zu einer Aufholjagd werden, nicht nur nach materiellem Wohlstand, sondern auch nach der damit verbundenen erlebnisorientierten Mentalitt. Dazu scheint es vorlufig keine Alternative zu geben, die irgend eine Chance auf Breitenwirkung htte.
