Zwar ist Schweden geographisch gesehen ein Teil Europas und trat 1995 auch der Europischen Union bei die innere Einstellung und die politische Haltung seiner Bewohner vermittelt jedoch eher das Bild von unwilligen Mitgliedern. Sie scheinen sich Europa ganz einfach nicht zugehrig fhlen zu wollen und zeigen dies auch deutlich bei Umfragen, Wahlen und Volksabstimmungen. Dazu mag das Selbstbild der Schweden ber sich und ihr Land beitragen. Ein Selbstbild, das stark mit der Mentalitt der Schweden zusammenhngt. Diese Arbeit soll einen Einblick geben, warum sich die Bewohner Schwedens nur so unwillig und mhsam fr die Idee einer europischen Gemeinschaft begeistern konnten und knnen. Was bedeutet die Europische Union fr die Schweden, warum frchten sie eine dortige Partizipation und verhinderten den Beitritt zur Whrungsgemeinschaft? Um die Hintergrnde zu verstehen, beginne ich mit einer bersicht ber die Geschichte des schwedischen EUBeitritts. Danach werde ich die Zge der schwedischen Mentalitt beleuchten, die als mgliche Ursachen fr Schwedens Auenseiterposition als europischer Partner dienen knnen. Abschlieend mchte ich kurz auf die EuropaPolitik Schwedens eingehen, insbesondere auf die gescheiterte Volksabstimmung zum Euro 2003 und die aktuelle Debatte zur Europischen Verfassung.
