Product Description Describes some of the scientific principles behind many actions and events in sports From School Library Journal Grade 58 Scientific principles underlie much of what happens in any sport. Therefore, the interest of many young people in sports becomes an effective way to introduce science. Most of the principles explained in this book have to do with physics. They are used to answer such questions as why a curve ball curves, why a spit ball is effective, how a karate expert smashes a board, and why place kickers approach the football "soccerstyle." This is an organized and clearly written book. The diagrams are, on the whole, very good; the blackandwhite illustrations add interest. Much of the same material has been covered in Science at the Ballgame (Walker, 1977; o.p.) by Thomas Aylesworth, but Gardner covers several topics in more detail and gears his book to a slightly older audience. Modern Sports Science (Morrow, 1986) by Larry Kettelkamp discusses the physiological aspect of sports, a topic that is only briefly touched on by Gardner.
