Increasingly, scholars in the humanities are calling for a reengagement with the natural sciences. Taking their cues from recent breakthroughs in genetics and the neurosciences, advocates of big history are reassessing longheld assumptions about the very definition of history, its methods, and its evidentiary base. In Scientific History, Elena Aronova maps out historians continuous engagement with the methods, tools, values, and scale of the natural sciences by examining several waves of their experimentation that surged highest at perceived times of trouble, from the crisisridden decades of the early twentieth century to the ruptures of the Cold War.The book explores the intertwined trajectories of six intellectuals and the larger programs they set in motion: Henri Berr (18631954), Nikolai Bukharin (18881938), Lucien Febvre (18781956), Nikolai Vavilov (18871943), Julian Huxley (18871975), and John Desmond Bernal (19011971). Though they held different political views, spoke different languages, and pursued different goals, these thinkers are representative of a larger motley crew who joined the techniques, approaches, and values of science with the writing of history, and who created powerful institutions and networks to support their projects. In tracing these submerged stories, Aronova reveals encounters that profoundly shaped our knowledge of the past, reminding us that it is often the forgotten parts of history that are the most revealing.

The coverage of key historical events through the lens of scientific experiments is really unique. The timeline from the Bolshevik Revolution to the end of the Cold War is well done. However, I didn't expect some of the chapters to be so dry. Still, it's a solid book for serious readers.

Not What I Expected
I was looking forward to this book, but it didn't quite meet my expectations. The title suggests a more engaging read, but I found some parts a bit tedious and complicated. I wish it was more accessible. Maybe it’s better for academics.

Interesting but Dense at Times
I found the content of this book super interesting, especially the chapters on the Cold War. However, some sections felt a bit dense and hard to follow. Still, it’s a solid read for anyone interested in how science and politics intertwine.

Great Insights, Somewhat Technical
This book offers great insights into political history and scientific methodologies. I bought it for my son, who’s studying political science, and he really appreciated the depth of analysis. But a few parts were pretty technical, which made it a challenge for casual readers.

A Must-Read for History Buffs!
I recently picked up this book on political experiments from the Bolshevik Revolution through the Cold War, and it's been a fascinating read! The way the author connects historical events with scientific experiments is so enlightening. Definitely worth adding to your collection if you love history.
