From School Library Journal PreSchoolWhen Sidney wakes up from his nap, his cheerful countenance has disappeared, and his father spends the entire story trying to coax him from his gloom. Ice cream and visits to the playground, zoo, and the movies are only some of the ploys the parent tries. Finally, a hug brings forth a tentative smile. Kornblatt's lightweight text cannot survive Gurney's illustrations. Sidney often looks as though he is at least six years old, but the story seems to call for a preschool child. The man's antics appear more embarrassing than funny, which may account for part of the boy's despondency. One positive note is that the father spends an extended period of time with his son, and genuinely tries to have fun with him. But the slight premise does not develop into a picture book that works. Preschoolers will be much more amused by such classics as H.A. Rey's "Curious George" (Houghton) books, to which Gurney includes visual references in at least half the doublepage spreads.Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MNCopyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc. Product Description When Sidney awakens from a nap with a frown on his face, Daddy sets out to search for Sidney's smile.
