Als Vorbilder gibt Schopenhauer die Philosophie Platons, vor allen Dingen auch diejenige Kants und der altindischen Upanischaden an. In der vorliegenden Arbeit soll der Zusammenhang zwischen Freiheit und Selbstmord, welcher im vierten Buch der Welt als Wille und Vorstellung Ausfhrung findet, auseinandergesetzt werden. Arthur Schopenhauer in eigener Person wird vielfach als Selbstmrder bezeichnet, der sich nie das Leben nahm. Doch nicht nur die persnliche Disposition des Frankfurter Philosophen macht eine solche Fragestellung interessant, handelt es sich doch hierbei um ein viel diskutiertes Thema in der Philosophie berhaupt. Im Grunde geht es dabei um Eines: Die Selbstbestimmung des Einzelnen. Selbstmord lsst sich unter diesem Gesichtspunkt also als Signatur der Freiheit' verstehen. Der Selbstmrder beweist seine Freiheit, indem er ber sich selbst verfgt.
