Wenn wir erkennen, dass wir unserer Vorstellung von einem guten Leben nicht gerecht werden knnen, weil unser Leben als solches oder unsere soziale Existenz bedroht ist, wird Selbsttuschung zu einer Mglichkeit, diesem Bedrohungsgefhl zu entkommen. Dass manche Personen der Versuchung zur Selbsttuschung dann auch tatschlich erliegen, geht auf einen spezifischen Mangel dieser Personen zurck. Es fehlt ihnen an der Tugend der accuracy (Bernard Williams), d.h. an der Fhigkeit, sorgfltig und gewissenhaft mit Informationen umzugehen. Wer sich selbst tuscht, vermeidet es bewusst, aus dem, was er wei, das zu erschlieen, was er erschlieen knnte. Selbsttuschung ist eine motivierte epistemische Inkonsequenz.
