Juan Morel Campos (18571896) is credited not only with giving the Puerto Rican danza its present form, but also with creating some of its best examples. Puerto Rico is a prime example of a musical culture absorbing and reflecting the characteristics of various other cultures, including 400 years of Spanish influence and, comparatively recently, at least two generations of North American influence, as well as lesser influences from England, France, Cuba, and Venezuela. The Puerto Rican danza assumed its definitive form around 1840 as a salon composition consisting of two sections: the paseo, an introductory passage, and the merengue which is the dance itself. The danzas of Morel Campos are extremely diverse, employing a variety of rhythmic patterns and both encompassing both melancholy and festive moods. Elias Barriero has transcribed the pieces in this collection in notation and tablature for solo classic guitar from the original piano scores.
