About the Author Virgie M. Binford is an educational consultant, motivational speaker and workshop facilitator. She serves on the executive board of directors of the National Council on SelfEsteem. A graduate of Virginia State University, Binford earned her bachelor and master's degrees in elementary education before earning her doctorates at Virginia Tech and New Hope Bible College and Seminary. She has also studied at Columbia University and the University of Virginia and internationally. Binford served Richmond Public Schools as a teacher, supervisor and director of various education programs. She is an adjunct instructor at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and has previously taught at Virginia Union University. Binford is actively involved in civic, church and educational organizations, including the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, All Souls Presbyterian Church and Pi Lambda Theta. She has been honored with a National Conference for Community and Justice Humanitarian Award and has been selected as a Leadership America attendee. Dorothy N. Cowling received a bachelor's degree from Virginia State College and a master's degree in early childhood education and highschool guidance and counseling from Columbia University. She completed additional studies at the University of Virginia and the University of Pennsylvania before obtaining a doctorate in education from Lehigh University. She continued her studies in France, Russia and Switzerland in psychology and the theory of learning and language development in children. Cowling has taught at the elementary, secondary and college levels, serving on the faculty and administrative staff of Virginia Union University. She has also served as a national consultant for the U.S. Office of Education. A native of Lancaster, Va., Cowling has resided in Richmond since 1951.
