Sentimental jewellery has always been valued as a tangible expression of emotion. To many people it is still almost as inconceivable that a women should engage herself to be married without receiving a ring as it is for her to go through the marriage ceremony without receiving another. But sentimental jewellery is occasioned by a much wider range of feelings and conditions that those relating to betrothal and marriage. Affection for family and friends, the passion of lovers, loyalty to a monarch or a cause, religious devotion and the death of loved ones have all been commemorated by jewels; the tokens of dalliance being as especially fruitful field. In Congreve's play, 'Love for Love' (1695), Tattle offers as proof of his numerous conquests 'letters, lockets, pictures and rings', well aware that these would clinch the matter with his hearers. The jewels illustrated and discussed here are all sentimental jewels of one kind or another; they comprise many types of personal ornament but exclude rings, which are the subject of a companion book in this series. Ranging in date from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century, when the genre was in a particularly flourishing state, they include pieces specially commissioned by rich and fashionable clients and others produced from standardized components for the popular market. These works frequently have in common certain decorative motifs such as hearts, an obvious sentimental device whose meaning has nevertheless to be read according to the purpose of the jewel. If the object of love was alive, the heart signified betrothal, marriage or a gesture of love and friendship; if dead, grief for the departed. Cupids, another popular motif, represent the triumph of love on the one hand and personify the angels on the these opposing uses stem from complementary traditions of secular and religious symbolism which are outlined.
