It started as a gift.'Stories from 55 Broad Street' was published in a small quantity as a personal gift from Humana Inc., Chairman of the Board, David A. Jones, to the twentythree employees who were with him near the World Trade Center on 9/11/01. Mr. Jones asked each employee to record what they witnessed, in their own words, 'in hopes that their experience will help us all come to terms with the meaning and consequences of that horrific day to hearten the living, even as we honor the dead these stories are set forth.'Here's a sample passage, illustrative of the flavor of the book:'I remember stopping to put on my sunglasses because my contact lenses began to feel gritty. Diane and I were at the back of our group as we made our way through the silent, empty streets. I felt that I had witnessed this scene before perhaps in a film or had I read it in a book: 'The refugees trudged onward, carrying all their belongings, fleeing the wartorn village . . .' There was no sound, no wind, only sirens in the distance.'
