This book provides a permanent record of the Mughal Tent project which united groups of Asian women and children in the creation of a unique collection of textile panels. The panels recorded here show an extraordinary freshness and beauty, fusing the influences of many cultures and revealing a blend of the traditional and modern. The project began in the UK but soon spread to nine other countries India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Burma, Malaysia, South Africa, Dubai, Ireland and the United States. The exhibition, Shamiana: The Mughal Tent, brought the work together in 'the tent that covered the world' at the V&A in summer 1997, followed by a threeyear international tour. The book celebrates this remarkable achievement and is a colourful record of a highly innovative arts education project which has become a model for institutions across the world.
