Le roman commence en janvier 1922. Le narrateur apprend qu'un clbre juriste allemand, Siegfried von Kleist, est en ralit l'un de ses amis, l'crivain Forestier. Pendant la guerre, une blessure a rendu Forestier amnsique ; il a t recueilli et a poursuivi sa vie sous un nom tout diffrent. Le narrateur part donc pour Munich o il peut identifier Forestier avec l'aide du baron Zelten. Mais ce voyage le replonge dans ses souvenirs d'tudiant et est l'occasion de plusieurs autres aventures. Le narrateur traverse l'Allemagne revancharde d'aprs la premire guerre mondiale. Finalement, le narrateur rentre dans le Limousin, sa rgion natale, en compagnie de Forestier, o ils comptent vivre une vie paisible.
