Product Description Discusses the invention and operation of simulators, how they are used to train people for responsible positions in aviation, transportation, the military, and spaceflight, and their possible use in space From School Library Journal Grade 69 The Smiths efficiently and effectively describe what simulators are, how they work, and their uses. They trace the origins of the machines through the story of Ed Link's Pilot Maker, first used in the 1930s to train aviators to fly by instruments, and delve into some current applicationsin the military; the space program; in training ship captains, nuclear power plant operators, railroad engineers, and air traffic controllers. Although brief, the description of each application is straightforward and clearly explained. Good quality blackandwhite photographs contribute to the text's message. Organization is a bit haphazard, jumping around from the opening passages, which describe flight training and drivereducation simulators, through sections on Ed Link, his invention, and general principles of how simulators work, and finally back into descriptions of more applications. Nevertheless, the book is still a good introduction to these reallife uses of automation. Jeffrey A.
