Noch im Gymnasium schreibt der 18jhrige erste Gedichte, die auch gedruckt werden. Whrend des Studiums in Leiden lernt er den Mystiker Abraham von Franckenberg kennen, der ihn in das Werk Jakob Bhmes einfhrt, auf das Scheffler spter seine Erkenntnis der Wahrheit zurckfhrt. 1652 lt er sich als Arzt in Breslau nieder, bekennt sich 1653 ffentlich zum Katholizismus und nennt sich fortan nach einem spanischen Mystiker Angelus. In einer Vielzahl energisch und zum Teil polemisch formulierter Streitschriften tritt er fr die schlesische Gegenreformation ein. Zwei Jahre nachdem er ehrenamtlicher Hofarzt von Kaiser Ferdinand III. und Mitglied der Rosenkranzbruderschaft geworden ist, wird er 1661 zum Priester geweiht und spter Hofmarschall des Breslauer Frstbischofs Sebastian von Rostock. Die letzten Lebensjahre bis zu seinem Tode 1677 lebt er zurckgezogen als Armenarzt im Breslauer Matthiasstift und verschenkt sein gesamtes Vermgen. Seine Lyrik reflektiert die Liebe der Seele zu ihrem Heiland, das tiefe religise Empfinden und die mystische Vereinigung. Sie zhlt zu den bedeutendsten Werken der Barockliteratur.
